Beneath the Surface

The world beneath the ocean's surface along the Pacific coast of North America is among the most spectacular on Earth. Lacking the colors and chaos of tropical coral reefs, these undersea habitats are dominated by enormous species of brown algae known as kelp. These create the 3-dimensional structure of kelp forests that teem with myriad marine life forms from Monterey to the Channel Islands off the southern California coast.
